International Women’s Day, dedicated to the struggle for women’s rights, arrives this year against the backdrop of the tragic circumstances in Gaza. Over the past five months, tens of thousands of Gazans have faced the devastating consequences of Israel’s relentless military offensive, resulting in widespread harm and casualties, with women and children disproportionately affected.

As the world marks Women’s Day, women in Gaza will struggle to survive daily bombardments while attempting to protect their physical and mental well-being, as well as their families. Over 9,000 women have been killed by Israel’s military attacks in Gaza, with thousands more either missing or buried under the debris. According to UN estimates, the ongoing conflict threatens the lives of an average of 63 women every day, including 37 women who will leave orphaned children and shattered families behind.

The unprecedented physical and mental devastation wrought by Israel’s assault has led to a catastrophic hunger crisis in Gaza. A staggering 9 out of 10 women have reported difficulties in feeding their families, resorting to desperate measures such as searching for food amidst the ruins or in garbage cans. 4 out of 5 women have had to skip meals, and an estimated 95% of mothers have sacrificed their nourishment for the sake of their children.
The war’s impact on Gaza’s women extends beyond physical harm, encompassing deep emotional and mental trauma. Six decades of Israeli military occupation, combined with 16 years of siege, have resulted in the severe erosion of their rights. The recent offensive has exacerbated the violation of their rights and dignity. On this day devoted to women’s solidarity, one can only hope that women in Gaza find the strength to persevere in their struggle for survival.

Israel must immediately end its assault on Gaza and allow unrestricted entry and safe distribution of aid throughout Gaza. This must include rehabilitating the local healthcare system, ensuring access to nutrition, and prioritizing the safety of all Gazan residents, especially girls, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children.
